Things I never thought I’d see: Official Chamber Reeboks, licensed by Marvel. Who’d have thunk my favourite X-man would actually break out of obscurity enough to inspire his own footwear. One can only hope it’s the start of a resurgence for the character. And needless to say, WANT. Despite the fact they look like they were designed by someone who thinks Good Charlotte are cutting edge epic bandage.

A Compendium of Cool Comics Cosplay: June 1st

Over on Gamma Squad, it’s time once again for our Friday comic book cosplay feature, casting the spotlight on the best comics related costumery from the cosplay community.  We’re focusing on those cosplayers who we think deserve special recognition for coming up with the best costumes, whatever the budget, and the photographers who capture them for posterity.

This week we’re featuring some awesome cosplay of Squirrel Girl, Roxy Rocket, Loki, Plastic Man, Phoenix, The Flash, Red Sonja, American Dream, Captain America, Batgirl, Wolverine and more!

Gamma Squad is committed to giving a voice to the cosplay community that thrives in groups like our friends at TheSuperheroCostumingForum.com. Each week we spotlight our favorite costumes and in addition we also host a regular cosplay contest, with the results forming a special theme week. We invite cosplayers, costumers and photographers to submit pictures of their work that relates to the theme (or any cosplay in general!) to our Flickr group to be considered. We’ll then pick our top choices and post them on Gamma Squad for the adoration of all.

Our current theme is:

  • Indie and Small Press Cosplay

For now, enjoy this week’s selection!

My good friend, the Grimlock of Comics, Jason Latour worked up this cherry of a piece for me at a local show a couple years back.  The guy is a workhorse, on both the writing and artistic front.  Prepare yourselves for his ascension.
Check out Jason’s brilliant scriptwork in Loose Ends, with Chris Brunner and Rico Renzi.

After watching the Tron: Uprising 30-minute preview, I decided to try something I’ve never tried before (*gasp!*) in coloring without an outline.
There was an underdrawing obviously but the main coloring was done by blocking in shapes of color. It’s a little hard for me to work on something without having a clear idea of what the finished piece is gonna look like which is why I need that linework (and why airbrushing gives me so much trouble) so it took a bit of time just to figure out how to work this out. I also tried to work with two different light sources (red and blue) which I find easier with more painterly stuff but I find actually harder with cel-shaded stuff. I liked the “blocky” feel of it so I kept blurs and effects to a minimum.
And I can’t draw lightning to save my life… (via Punk Storm)

All the marvel universe spy stuff that’s been on my dash is making me think that I should remind everyone that Queen & Country is the best spy book and Tom/Tara is the greatest ‘spies tragically in love’ story.  This is an objective fact, supported by the many tear stains on my Q&C trades.
