Another quick Kamala drawing for the night! Kamala in her hat and coat from some of the designs we saw today. I seriously cannot wait to find out more about her and her personality and her everything.
Literally Kamala Khan gives zero f’s about her outfit, lol. I’m not even kidding this is what she is wearing in the concept art….»>
And I drew this very fast, very sloppy fjkdlajf idk.
Super Best Friends Of Ol’ Marvel
Attempt at some SBFF-style Marvel heroines. Digging the Ms. Marvel announcement, wanted to get some Kamala art down, even if I don’t have a real grasp of the character yet. But, any excuse to draw some more Anya. And first time I’ve drawn Kate too, even if she came out a little Lois-Lane-y.
I already like the new Miss Marvel and i can’t wait to read the first issue. That’s why i had to do a quick fanart of her with her role model, and i’ll definitely do a better one when i have more free time.
Hey so you know there’s a new Ms Marvel series coming up, right? Written by G Willow Wilson and drawn by Adrian Alphona? Well, I had the honour of designing her costume, and here it is! The idea was to mix in a bit of her own style, a bit of Captain Marvel (her hero), and a little of the classic Cockrum Ms Marvel costume.
✸ This is the story of Captain Marvel, her many foes and challenges and how our intrepid hero became the hero we call Earth’s Mightiest Avenger, and how she inspired.
Character Designs for Marvel’s upcoming "Ms. Marvel" by Adrian Alphona.
Can we just appreciate how wonderfully charming these designs are?
I am so excited for this book I can’t even say!
That’s a lot of M’s.
The number of non-white characters headlining their own comic books has been awfully low for these past few months. While DC launched the New 52 with five titles starring black or Latino characters, only one - Batwing - remains. As for Marvel, I can’t even remember the last time any such book existed.
It looks like things are changing. The new Ms. Marvel, teased in promo images for the next wave of Marvel NOW!, is Kamala Khan. CBR says that she is a shape-shifting Pakistani-American from New Jersey who is “a major fan of Carol Danvers, the former Ms. Marvel and current Captain Marvel” (CBR).
Kamala will star in her own book by G. Willow Wilson, who says the character’s origins came up in conversations with editor Sana Amanat, who is Muslim-American.
I believe this is the first title by a major publisher to be headlined by a Muslim character, though several other Muslim heroes - like Monet St. Croix and Nightrunner - exist.
Being from a Middle Eastern family, I have to say this is pretty exciting (although Pakistan is not in the Middle East, its culture tends to get roped in with ours). Especially when the writer characterizes her like this:
"She’s strong, beautiful and doesn’t have any of the baggage of being Pakistani and ‘different."
I grew up watching Arabs, Muslims, and Middle Easterners being depicted mostly as avatars of their respective cultures. It’s early days yet, but it’s refreshing to see Marvel mix things up with a character not marginalized or defined by what makes her ‘different’.
All this and Adrian Alphona?
BESTILL MY HEART.
